Garikai Health was founded in 2020 and is providing support for safe deliveries in the community of Kuwadzana in Zimbabwe. We are distributing safe-delivery packs, so women have a safe and hygienic delivery.
We are convinced that Garikai vanaMai will help to reduce the maternal mortality rate of Zimbabwe by ensuring that the pregnancy journey and birth is safe, hygienic and dignified. Garikai means “to live in peace” in Shona and Garikai vanaMai lets mothers live in peace, wealth and comfort.
The national review of maternal deaths deemed that 47% of these deaths are avoidable. Maternal mortality in Zimbabwe remains high because of:
Communities need to have healthy and well-informed mothers to sustain healthy families. Ensuring that health-care facilities have sufficient supplies is crucial for them to provide efficient and effective service delivery. We provide birthing packs to expectant moms including a bucket to carry water, surgical gloves, surgical blades and suturing material, umbilical cord clamps, cotton wool, swabs and sanitary towels, surgical antiseptic and soap, baby receiving blanket and hat and linen savers.
Our continued work with local Polyclinic in the community, has expanded over the few years. December Christmas Cheer Drive saw a large number of donations which were directed towards ensuring more women receive dignified birth with our Garikai Mom packs.
